Our Mission

The Windy Waters Conservancy™ (WWC) is the Business name of the Waukewan Shore Owners Association, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt charitable organization. Our mission is to protect and preserve the water bodies and boréal and wetland habitats in the Lake Waukewan Watershed and to preserve its ecology and scenic beauty.

Waukewan Lake Level
Message from the President

If you’ve looked at your shoreline or have been out in your boat, you have noticed the Lake level and found it concerning. I have received a number of inquiries as to the cause of this low level. I wanted to share what I know.

Since Lake Waukewan is the water supply for the Town of Meredith, the water drawn out of the Lake is approximately 343,000 gallons of water per day on average, with higher peak demands during the summer months, reaching around 600,000 gallons per day to meet the needs of its 45% serviced population and seasonal visitors. The winter level draw down, as mandated by the state, is done Columbus Day by the dam operator who is an employee of the Mill Falls Inn group. The town of Meredith does not control the Lake level. We’re close to the winter Lake level now. The main contributing factor for this low level is due to the lack of beneficial rain for the past month or so.  The falls hasn't been running for a few weeks and most of the boards in the dam have been placed as a control measure. According to the canal gauge, we are down 16
inches from the summer level expected. Winnipesaukee is down over 17 inches from their summer level. All our Lakes are being affected.

There are rocks showing now in places that many have never seen before. Some of our neighbors, concerned about the low level, have taken their boats out. The Town ramp may get dicey for boat retrieval if we keep losing the water level at this rate. Most of us remove our boats prior to the Columbus Day draw down and are not used to seeing the Lake this low in August. We’re close to the winter level now. Use your best judgement as to when to pull your boats. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do now, but in the future one of the benefits of the upcoming canal project should better control the water level. Stay tuned for more……..`

Your VLAP report WILL be posted in the document library on the NHDES website later this spring. For now, your report will be posted to the Lake Information Mapper. There’s also a lot of other information here, so please utilize the mapper to your advantage!

Cyanobacteria

FB Environmental Associates has published the Lake Waukewan Cyanobacteria Monitoring and Response Plan. The plan was created in collaboration with the Lake Winnipesaukee Alliance, University of New Hampshire, Meredith Water Department, Town of Meredith, Waukewan Watershed Advisory Committee, VLAP volunteers, and New Hampshire Department of Environmental Service.

The Lake Winnipesaukee Association has created a poster with information about how to spot cyanobacteria.

Dogs
State and Town Ordinances

  • Dogs not allowed in Lake. Waukewan.
  • Dogs must be on a leash while adjacent to the shoreline.
  • No dog waste shall be left within 200 feet of the lake.
